Our Year 3 children had a hoot this week as they were visited by some very friendly owls! It was thanks to our excellent Year 3 topic 'Predators', and we are very grateful to Tina and Martin for bringing along Bob and Ollie the Owls to say 'Hello'!
It was a wonderful chance for the children to hear from an expert and experience a hands on workshop. The children were able to observe how the owls move and feed and were also able to handle the animals and feel their form and feathers! Our pupils were fantastically well-behaved and showed great interest, listening carefully to the expert’s explanations and information and asking plenty of relevant questions.
And after that, some super Science work with an owl pellet dissection! The children watched footage of an owl producing a pellet of indigestible material, predicting what the pellet might contain before dissecting a real owl pellet! They used their observational skills to discover what the owl had eaten by separating pieces of bone and other materials found in the pellet, and washing them carefully in a sieve. The children then really enjoyed the challenge of having to identify any bone fragments before piecing the skeleton together! What a great project!
