In Year 6 our children enjoy one of our most engaging topics - 'A Child's War'. It's a topic which facilitates so much great learning in all areas of the curriculum, and which we love to especially link to both our local area and our children's families - here you can see how the children have not only learned all about Anderson Shelters in their studies, they have also focused in on their Design and Technology skills to determine what they were made from and how they were constructed. Moving on, the children used a range of materials to construct a structurally sound miniature Anderson shelter, and went on to use their structures to test loading capacity, using rubble or sand, recording their results on a spreadsheet, highlighting the most effective structures. It's a wonderful way to meet some of our curriculum goals for D&T - in this case, 'learning to select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities'.
